Week #7: Taygeta Star... The Frankenstein version of quilting

Also known as...when you dive into your fabric stash looking for a specific color, and realize you definitely lack that color.

This was a very interesting challenge. I want to see how it comes out when I try to put these together. There were some that I definitely didn't have enough of (that bright green for instance). I can't wait to start sewing it together and see how it comes out. It feels like I am taking incomplete parts, and seeing how they end up together.

I hope I don't end up with a monster.

A Star In Blue: The Merope Star

This was week two of the National Quilter's Circle  Block of the week for week #2. I had a lot of fun with this square. It was challenging, and as you can see, had some sewing on the bias, which I have avoided doing before this. It also had the really tiny center and man, that bias really threw me. Even using starch didn't seem to help much here. However, that was only my first attempt at the square, and I don't think it was that bad.

Takeaways:

  • This also happened to be my first time using my quarter inch piecing foot.
  • More time needs to be taken to pin the matching seams together to get it perfect.
  • Perhaps starch wasn't my friend in this.
  • Still,a really pretty star.

When following the instructions doesn't lead to desired results

This weekend, I have been working on one of the baby blankets that I have due in the next few months. My plans were to add the backing to this top that I finished. A gray elephant minky that fit this perfectly. I went ahead and sewed it to all four sides, following the instructions in the Self Binding Baby Blanket video from Missouri Star Quilt Company.

I thought surely a rectangular blanket would act the same as a square blanket. However, after sewing the corners and cutting them appropriately....you can see the corners were not lying flat. Even after trying to make the sides equal, those corners were not lying down at all.
I broke down and ripped out the corners and now, it lies flat, but I have these fantastic corners that have nothing on them.

Going to have to percolate on this issue for this week and see what I can come up with.
